Nearly 2.4 million people will be traveling this Fourth of July weekend, and 89% of these travelers will be going by car. After what was one of the deadliest weekends in Connecticut on Memorial Day 2022 since 2006, state authorities are working to ensure that 4th of July will be safe for residents across the state who want to enjoy the weekend full of fireworks and parades.

Different initiatives, such as DUI checkpoints and increased patrols, will be in place, so these celebrations can be enjoyed to the fullest. See below some local information and recommendations by your local Hartford bail bond agent.

Connecticut Plans to Keep Roadways Safe

Since the 4th of July lands on a Monday this year, it creates a four-day weekend with more chances for drunk driving occurrences throughout the state than other years. Because of this, state police will be enforcing various measures to ensure safety for drivers throughout the weekend. Some include laser units for speed enforcement, marked and unmarked non-traditional police vehicles to monitor roadways, and increased units throughout the state as thousands of travelers will be using roads and highways across Connecticut.

A DUI checkpoint for potential signs of drunk driving is located in Southbury conducted by State Police Troop A from Saturday at 7 pm through Sunday at 3 am at Interstate 84’s westbound Exit 18 off-ramp.

In recent years, Connecticut has seen a decrease in DUI arrests on the Fourth of July. Prior to the pandemic in 2019, 50 people were arrested on DUI charges during the holiday. But in 2020, this number has decreased to 29 and in 2021, it further went down to 26.  Since 2020, there have been four deaths from DUI related accidents on the Fourth of July. But even with these decreasing statistics, after Memorial Day weekend 2022 (May 28-30) where 12 people died from car crashes on Connecticut roads, state authorities want to take as many precautionary measures to ensure residents’ safety.

Along with earlier mentioned initiatives, state authorities also remind people to always wear their seatbelts, follow the posted speed limits, and focus on driving when behind the wheel; don’t let electronic devices distract you. Authorities say to have a designated driver if you will be out celebrating and suspect there will be alcohol involved. They also remind residents that if you are driving and may suspect a drunk driver, call 911 immediately.
