The city of Middletown CT located in Middlesex County dates all the way back to the 1600s and sits strategically aside the Connecticut River. Being in a central area of the state, Middletown makes easy accessibility to two larger cities in the state; New Haven, and the state’s capital, Hartford. The town received its current name in 1653 after losing its original name, Mattabeseck, which was used in earlier years during its incorporation period.

Over the years, Middletown has served an important part in the sailing and industrial businesses at the beginnings of both industries. Using the large, steel Arrigoni Bridge to enter the town, the city offers a variety of outdoor attractions as well as scenic waterside views. In its downtown area lies a diverse set of restaurants, small businesses, and retail shops. Being close to Wesleyan University, there’s always something to do in Middletown.

Brownstone Exploration and Discovery Park

Located in Portland, a town right across the river from Middletown, is the exciting Brownstone Exploration and Discovery Park. Visiting the Brownstone Quarry, guests can enjoy their day with food and drinks, available for purchase at the park, or bring their own. Spending the day here, activities range from swimming, water slides, and obstacles, to rope swings, wakeboarding, and kayaks or paddleboarding. Since the water area is inside the Brownstone Quarry, you’ll be surrounded by bouldering cliffs that also offer fun ways to spend the day. The park offers zip lines, rock climbing, and cliff jumps suited for people of all ages. Brownstone is open every day of the week and closes for the season in September.

Wadsworth Falls State Park

At this state park in Middletown Connecticut, Wadsworth Falls has many hiking and biking trails for everyone. One of the main centerpieces of the area is Big Falls, a waterfall offering scenic views and visits. To swim at the park, there is a separate designated space, as well as picnicking and recreation. Millers Pond State Park and Cockaponset State Forest (South CT)

In Durham, a few miles over from Middletown, Millers Pond State Park is an area that provides spaces for fishing, hunting, biking, hiking, and much more. The pond is a recreational space that can also be used for picnics. With natural lands and views, the park serves as a nice getaway near the water. Another close park similar to Millers Pond is Cockaponset State Forest in Chester, CT. Cockaponset State Forest is a recreational space that’s home to Connecticut’s second-largest state forest. Although swimming is prohibited here, the stunning lake and area make it a trip worthwhile.

This Middletown CT area state forest offers a larger recreational space called Pattaconk Lake Recreation Area that’s right on the lake, allowing for food, drinks, and activities. Some other outdoor parks to check out in the Middletown area are Mattabesett Trail, Doctor Francis Giuffrida Park, Chauncey Peak, and Harbor Park.

Notable People Born in Middletown

Middletown CT is home to lists of notable people, many participating in professional sports leagues, entertainment industries, and government positions. Dean Acheson, born in 1893 is one of the most notable from the city. Acheson served as the United States Secretary of State for both of President Harry Truman’s terms, from 1945 to 1953. Having large roles in the Korean War, Acheson also helped develop the Marshall Plan, Truman Doctrine, and North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

Another popular face that was born in Middletown is Joey Logano. Born in 1990, Logano is best known for being a professional NASCAR driver. Holding the record for the youngest winner of a Nationwide Series race, he also became the youngest winner of a Cup Series. He is also the youngest driver to win two of NASCAR’s top divisions. Logano is also the youngest to ever win both a Cup and Xfinity Series, and in 2018, Logano won the NASCAR Cup Series Championship.
