Three-Month Free Bus Transportation for Connecticut Residents Ends June 30

On March 24th, Governor Ned Lamont approved House Bill 5501, emergency bipartisan legislation that suspended Connecticut’s excise tax on gas starting from April 1st and extending to June 30th considering rising gas prices. At the same time, now you can enjoy free bus fares in Connecticut for the same period.

The current state excise on gas is 25 cents per gallon. The bill was approved unanimously in the state House and Senate. In addition, the legislation suspends fares on public buses statewide.

The three-month suspension of bus fares was implemented for many of the same reasons as House Bill 5501: to take the stress off residents considering rising gas prices, which would raise fare prices as well.

Free Bus Transportation Helps Defendants in Jail and their Families

When someone is incarcerated, getting to the prison facility can be a challenge, specially if you don’t have your own transportation. Here is when free bus fares in Connecticut can come in handy. Bail agencies help by offering an online bail bonds process, but you may still need a ride to pick up the inmate.

After the bond is processed, transportation is still another struggle for clients. Now with free fares on Connecticut’s biggest bus routes, residents from all over the state can find rides to any jail they need access to at any time of the day. Defendants, released on bail, may be able to take bus services from the jails directly as they do not need to pay for this service.

Accessible cities with free bus fares in Connecticut include these routes: New Haven, Bridgeport, Meriden, New Britain, and Hartford, CT.

Free CT Rides Help Students Get to School and Work

Free Connecticut bus rides help college students get to school and work at no cost. This initiative seems to have given young workers quite a break, as the New Haven Independent shares. Young residents who do not drive usually rely on their parents for services like Lyft, Uber, or public transportation. Knowing that this transportation service is completely free only until June 30th, make sure to use it and pass it along to your circle of friends and family.

As spring blooms, free bus fares can also provide opportunities for affordable Mother’s Day trips for families struggling with transportation. For students and their families who live near these bus lines, residents can take advantage of spending time outdoors, traveling to beaches, state parks, and other local attractions.

It is unclear how long gas prices will continue to soar, but it is best to take advantage of these free bus fares in Connecticut while they last. From easier transportation options to finding new and more fun ways to spend your time off, let these opportunities lighten the load of excessive gas prices.

The suspension of bus fares could be a fantastic opportunity for residents and non-residents to explore Connecticut’s hidden gems at a lower cost.
