CT Judicial Branch Reopens Courts and Expands Hours

The reopening of more CT Judicial Branches is scheduled throughout June, according to a recent announcement by the Connecticut Judicial Branch. The Judicial system is also targeting July 6th as a date to fully expand to normal operational hours, including the opening of court buildings Monday through Friday throughout Connecticut.

After nearly 3 months of limited hours, the reopening will be followed by strict guidelines to keep the public and court personnel safe. Cloth face-coverings are still mandatory to enter any Connecticut Superior Court.

As part of the first round of Superior Courts reopening, the Connecticut Judicial Branch reopens the Middlesex Judicial District Courthouse in Middletown, Rockville’s Geographical Area No. 19 Courthouse, and the Litchfield Judicial District Courthouse at Torrington as of June 8, 2020″. As of June 8th, the Judicial Branch continues to expand criminal matter services through remote pretrial conferences with a Judge, a prosecutor, and a defense attorney to see if an agreement may be reached. These initial efforts will be oriented for defendants currently in custody. “When appropriate, these hearings can be heard via video conferencing at correctional facilities,” Judge Carroll said. “Our criminal matters unit is working closely with the Department of Correction to ensure there are time slots available for each courthouse. DOC has acquired technology that will allow the agency to open an additional hearing room at certain high-volume correctional facilities.”

Upcoming Increase of Current Open Courthouse Hours, June 15, 2020

The Judicial Branch is planning to expand its hours and days of operations. All currently open courthouses will be open Monday through Friday as of June 15. Increasing current open court hours has been a top priority.

The scheduled court locations hours of operation are as follows: Mondays 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday to Friday 9 a.m. -1 p.m.

The recent press release states “that most work within the open court locations will continue to focus on those most pressing matters such as criminal arraignments for defendants held on bond, domestic violence cases, restraining orders, emergency child custody matters, juvenile detention hearings, and all other emergency matters.”

Connecticut Courthouse reopening includes four additional courthouses. The Judicial Districts of Danbury, Milford, Stamford, and Superior Court in Danielson are scheduled to reopen.

Starting on June 15, the Connecticut Juvenile courts located in Hartford and in Bridgeport will expand their hours of operation. The hours for these juvenile courts are Mondays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Tuesday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The CT Judicial Branch expects to fulfill regular operational hours the week of July 6, 2020

All open courthouse locations are scheduled to be open to the public the week of July 6 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

“We continue to plan for increasing expansion of the Branch’s physical footprint and all business operations in a way that places personal safety of the public, the bar and employees at the forefront while also balancing the requirement to continue to provide expanded access,” Chief Court Administrator Patrick L. Carroll III said.”
